This Week in Imaging: Update on Potential Tariffs and Impacts

This week, the big news was tariffs – with the U.S. imposing 25 percent tariffs on Canada and Mexico on February 3rd, and then pausing them for 30 days.

The tariffs would have affected various printers and printer consumables. For instance, the U.S. recently certified that various Lexmark and Konica Minolta printers and MFPs as Mexico being their country of manufacture, which would make them them subject to the Mexico tariff. Meanwhile, Xerox makes its EA toner in Canada, and HP Inc. also makes some printers in Mexico.

Although the Canada and Mexico tariffs are paused, the U.S. also imposed a 10 percent tariff on China, which hasn’t been paused. Many printer companies continue to manufacture in China, including HP, Canon, Fujifilm, etc.

How this will wind up is anyone’s guess. China swiftly retaliated with tariffs on U.S. crude oil, agricultural machinery, and more. This might cause enough disruption in the U.S. that it might negotiate a trade deal easing tariffs on both sides. Those affected by the tariffs would either absorb the costs themselves or pass them onto customers.

Meanwhile, a host of printer companies released financial results this week – ranging from very good (Fujifilm) to not so good (Konica Minolta). One thing that stood out to us was that Fujifilm Business Innovation did much better in its third quarter – might its expansion into Europe and the U.S. be paying off?
