This year marks some interesting anniversaries in the document-imaging industries: Konica Minolta is celebrating its 20th anniversary in production print, while Canon Inc. is also celebrating an anniversary in production print, specifically, 10 years in the cut-sheet inkjet-printing segment.

Evolution of Digital Production Printing

Back in the late 1980s/early 1990s, one of the biggest developments in the office-technology industry was the transition from analog to digital copiers.

Similarly, in the production-print industry, one of the biggest developments was the development of digital production printers. The advantages were many, including much greater flexibility, including the ability to cost-effectively run shorter print jobs, as the time-consuming task of setting up printing plates was eliminated. The first digital production printer was introduced in 1993, the Indigo E-Print 1000 digital printing press.

Since then, a number of office copier/MFP companies have entered the production print market with both inkjet and laser toner systems.

Following is a look at office-imaging companies in the production print market:

Xerox: Key production-print offerings include the iGen, Versant., Iridesse, Primelink, and Nuvera.

Fujifilm: Key offerings include the Jet Press, Inca Digital Printers, JetPress, and Revoria.

Canon: Key offerings include the VarioPrint i-series, imagePRESS, ProStream ColorStream, and Océ VarioPrint.

HP Inc.: Key offerings include HP Indigo and HP PageWide.

Ricoh:  Key offerings include the Pro C9200 and Pro TF6250.

Konica Minolta: Key offerings include the AccurioPress and AccurioLabel.

Kyocera: Key offering is the TASKalfa.

Sharp: Sharp is the newest office-imaging company to the production printer market with its Pro series.

Also of note: Epson: Epson is not in the high-volume production print market, but it has been in the commercial print market since about 2008, with wide-format printers for textile and signage printing, CAD, and graphic arts.
