New Mopria Print Service 2.0 Provides User Authentication, More, for Android-Printing to Mopria-Certified Printers and MFPs

One longstanding key concern that businesses have had with mobile printing is making sure that only authorized mobile users can print to their printers and MFPs. Today however, the Mopria Alliance, a global non-profit organization chartered to drive industry-wide standards for mobile printing, announced that it’s addressing that concern with the newest version of its Mopria Print Service, which it says enables Android mobile users access to new Mopria mobile-printing capabilities, including user authentication.

The Mopria Alliance was announced in September 2013 by four imaging vendors, Canon, Hewlett-Packard, Samsung, and Xerox, which founded the non-profit group. It’s dedicated to simplifying wireless printing from smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices, as well as to creating industry standards for mobile printing.

New Mopria Print Service 2.0

The new Mopria Print Service 2.0 release is said to include enterprise-level features that provide for user authentication, which will enable Mopria users to print to Mopria-certified printers that require user authentication to enter credentials or PIN codes. The update also provides job accounting, transport security, and document stapling with any Mopria-certified printer or MFP.

Since its launch, the Mopria Print Service has enabled printing from Android (4.4 or later) smartphones and tablets to Mopria-certified printers and MFPs from 98 percent of worldwide printer manufacturers. Mopria allows users to print photos, Web pages, and documents when their mobile device is connected to a Mopria-certified printer through a wireless network or using Wi-Fi Direct. Supported print settings include features such as color, number of copies, duplex, paper size, page range, media type, and page orientation.

“The Mopria Print Service 2.0 gives business users a new, simple way to print from their mobile devices to Mopria-certified enterprise-class printers, regardless of printer brand, while at the office, traveling for work or at home,” commented Greg Kuziej, chairman of the board at the Mopria Alliance. “With the rise of BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) and the mobile enterprise, the need for standardized printing from mobile devices in the workplace has never been clearer.”

The Mopria Alliance also reports that in the two years since its establishment, the nonprofit membership organization has grown to 21 members representing more than 98 percent of the worldwide printer business. The Mopria Print Service is available for download from Google Play or here. Mopria technology is also currently pre-loaded and available for immediate use on select Huawei and Amazon devices.
