New Mid-Volume Document Scanner from Epson, the WorkForce DS-520, with Scan to Cloud

Epson America is continuing its fall 2014 product launches, rolling out its latest document scanner, the WorkForce DS-520 ($399.99 MSRP) sheet-fed scanner, which it rates at up to 30 ppm/60 ipm (based on letter-size scans at 300 dpi in black-and-white, grayscale, or color mode), and which is designed for mid-volume scan volumes. Included is Epson’s Document Capture Pro software, for advanced color and image-adjustment, and OCR (optical character recognition) software for converting scanned documents into text-editable documents. There’s also TWAIN and ISIS scan drivers.

Other Features

The WorkForce DS-520 also features single-pass duplex scanning, as it scans both sides of one sheet in just one pass, and a 50-page ADF. It can scan folded pages, rigid ID cards, stacks of business cards, and single sheets. The scanner also has three sets of rollers for dynamic skew protection with ultrasonic double-feed detection technology, which senses if more than a single page has been fed, and automatically stops the feeding to avoid missing pages or jamming.

The WorkForce DS-520 also features a compact size, standing at 6.1” tall, 11.7” wide and 6” deep. The Color Enhance feature captures specific and continuously variable colors from the original document, successfully manipulating how the software captures and removes color from the original page, while Color Dropout removes any color from the scanned image. Users can isolate and save up to six different colors to capture or remove for each scan profile, simplifying the capture and maintenance of data for repeat use. The DS-520 also includes automatic paper-size detection, and document hole-punch removal.

Epson Document Capture Pro Software

Designed for creating editable, easily-searchable files, the WorkForce DS-520 provides users with multiple options to automate workflow. Epson Document Capture Pro software for Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac allows users to scan to popular cloud-based document-storage sites, including Google Docs, MS SharePoint, and Evernote (Epson Document Capture software must be installed on the connected Windows PC or Mac), and access documents from multiple devices, or share documents with others. Document Capture Pro also enables users to manage and route documents by scanning directly to email, FTP sites, or any computer folder.

As the scanner is enabled with TWAIN and ISIS drivers, businesses can continue using the document-management software of their choice to better fit their work environments. An optional network module (sold separately) can support up to 100 work stations with complete scanner functionality.
