New HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Series ‘Highest-End A4s’ with Highest Level of Security, FutureSmart 4, More

HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Series

HP Inc. today launched its new HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Series standalone printers and MFPs. In a conference call with analysts held last month, Stephen Schmitt, vice president of Office Printing Systems for HP Imaging, explained that the new models reflect HP Inc’s four strategies for delivering growth in the printer/MFP market: printer/MFPs optimized for digital workflows, as well as optimized for user collaboration, best service, and best uptime, as well as optimized fleet-management and security.

The new models include up to 17 SKUs with 26 available bundles ranging from 50 to 75 ppm, and are available now through resellers or directly through HP. HP’s Schmitt also said that security, as well as managed print services (MPS), will also be key for HP, noting, “Continued innovation in security will be key for HP.. and by 2020, two-thirds of HP printers will be under a service contract.” Also key will be “integration of printers into key vertical markets …hospitals, retail banks, etc.”

Troy Browne, marketing manager for Office Printing Systems for HP Imaging, explained that the new the LaserJet Enterprise 600 series – which consists of two base standalone-printer configurations, and two base MFP configurations –  are HP’s highest-end A4 devices, featuring the highest level of security, with the workgroup-class MFPs supporting from 10 to 30 users.

According to HP’s Browne: “This is a complete ground-up redesign.” The new models feature:

  • More toner in toner cartridges for longer uptime and less user intervention (replacing cartridges). Toner cartridges feature HP’s JetIntelligence cartridge technology for producing greater page yields. HP first introduced its toner cartridges with JetIntelligence for greater page yields in September 2015 – see New HP LaserJet 400 Series Printers and MFPs with JetIntellligence for 33-Percent More Printshere.
  • Faster real-world performance, including faster First Page Out Times (FPOTs) and faster wake-up from sleep mode. Browne explained that while many customers like the energy-saving aspect of sleep mode (the device powers down, consuming less energy), users have complained that waking up from sleep mode takes too long. However, thanks to the newest version of HP’s JetIntelligence soluiton, waking up from sleep mode has been reduced to as fast as just two seeconds – “That’s real-world performance,” says Browne.
  • HP says it’s also improved two-sided duplexing efficiency, and that models print as fast in duplex mode as in simplex mode, also thanks to JetIntelligence – which is now available across the entire HP A4 line.
  • Deepest level of security – see below for more.

Highest Level of Security, Optimized Cost per Page

Brown explained that security is key for HP printing and imaging, noting, “A printer is exactly like a PC. It has a hardware drive, network access, email (communication). They’re another computer sitting on the network… The LaserJet Enterprise 600 Series block intrusions and are self-healing. If they detect a breach, they’ll re-boot with a clean version of software.”

Security features include:

  • HP Sure Start: The BIOS is a set of boot instructions used to load fundamental hardware components and initiate the HP FutureSmart firmware of an enterprise-class HP printer or MFP. HP Sure Start technology validates the integrity of the BIOS at every boot cycle. If a compromised version is discovered, the device restarts using a safe, “golden copy” of the BIOS.
  • Whitelisting: Enterprise-class HP devices feature FutureSmart firmware. Like a PC’s operating system, firmware coordinates hardware functions, runs the control panel, determines what features are available when printing, scanning, or emailing, and provides network security. HP notes that compromised firmware can make a printer or MFP vultnerable to attack. Whitelisting helps ensure only authentic, known-good HP code that has not been tampered with is loaded into memory. If an anomaly is detected, the device reboots to a secure, offline state. It then sends a notice to IT staff to reload the firmware.
  • Run-time intrusion detection: HP’s run-time intrusion detection helps protect devices while they are operational and connected to the network, when most attacks occur. This feature checks for anomalies during complex firmware and memory operations. In the event of an intrusion, the device automatically reboots.

These are also the first A4 products from HP with contractually optimized cost per page. They will have their own set of toner cartridges only available with contract, and will provide  the “lowest cost per page.”

The LaserJet 600 Series also features a touchscreen interface that presents a simple home page for pint, copy, scan, etc., but can be extensively customized with shortcuts, for instance, for making a scan-and-distribution a one-step process.

Advanced Productivity and WorkFlow

The LaserJet 600 Series features tablet-like user interface – a touchscreen previously only available only with HP A3 LaserJets. New touchscreen features include a message center, improved document preview, more customization, centralized contacts, and new apps. HP says the user interface firmware will continue to be upgradeable for investment protection into the future.

The 600 Series also features enhanced WorkFlow capabilities, included enhanced document scanning, capture, and routing.

The 600 Series MFPs include all-new JetIntelligence capabilities built-in starting at the toner particle level, specially engineered to help customers save money and time while improving carbon footprints and energy efficiencies. For example, these devices can wake up out of sleep mode to full performance in as fast as 9 seconds.

FutureSmart 4

HP also introduced its next-generation of FutureSmart, version 4; the FutureSmart platform, which HP introduced several years ago, enables HP to upgrade its printers and MFPs with new technology as it becomes available. Note that the latest version of FutureSmart (4) can also be rolled back to most existing A4 LaserJets, including the new touchscreen.

The LaserJet Enterprise 600 Series consists of these models, which are designed 10-30 people printing up to 30,000 pages per monthP print speeds are rated at up to 75 (black)/60 (color) ppm color.
