Home Depot Begins Selling MakerBot 3D Printers in Select Stores

Home-improvement retail chain Home Depot has begun selling 3D printers and a 3D scanner in select stores in New York City, Chicago, Los Angelos, and San Francisco. The 3D printers and 3D scanner are made by Makerbot, which was acquired by Stratasys last year. As noted below, Home Depot also features a 3D printer from Afinia.

The models for sale consist of the following, as well as the plastic filament used by the 3D printers to create 3D objects:

• MakerBot Replicator Desktop 3D Printer (fifth-Generation) ($2,899.00 list price).
• MakerBot Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanner ($799.00 list price).
• MakerBot Replicator Mini Compact 3D Printer (fifth-generation) ($1,375.00 list price).
• AFINIA H-Series H480 Desktop 3D Printer ($1,299.00 list price)

Home Depot has been offering the 3D printers and 3D scanner on its Web site for about three months, but this is the first time they’ll be available in stores.

“It’s a pilot for us to test a potential disruptive technology, and to make sure we are on the forefront of a new innovative product,” Joe Downey, an online merchant at Atlanta-based Home Depot, said in an interview with Bloomberg News. According to Bloomberg News, although Home Depot doesn’t expect the 3D printers to be a major source of revenue, it believes they’ll appeal to forward-thinking contractors and do-it-yourselfers for creating parts and supplies to be used in repairs.
