Fujifilm Business Innovation Awarded EcoVadis Gold for Environmental Sustainability
Fuifilm Business Innovation of Tokyo, Japan, today announced that it’s received the Gold medal awarded to the top five percent of companies rated by EcoVadis, a business-environmental sustainability ratings provider.
EcoVadis evaluates companies’ ESG (environmental, social, and governance) policies and initiatives for four categories: Environment, Labor and Human Rights, Ethics, and Sustainable Procurement. Over 130,000 companies across over 220 industries and in over 180 countries have participated in its assessments. In this year’s award, Fuifilm Business Innovation excelled in two categories: Environment and Sustainable Procurement.
Within the Environment category, the company received maximum scores for four of the seven management indicators: Endorsement, Measures, Certifications, and Coverage. It was highly rated for its initiatives to address climate change and promote resource circulation, environmental performance of products, and external certifications for environmental responsiveness.
Fuifilm Business Innovation Environmental Initiatives
Fuifilm Business Innovation says it’s working on technology development and resource circulation with the aim of responding to climate change and promoting resource circulation through its products. For example, as one facet of the company’s initiatives to address climate change, the company been working to improve the energy efficiency of its products, such as developing its Super EA-Eco toner, which achieves toner fusing to paper at a temperature approximately 30 to 35°C lower than conventional toners, thus reducing printer and MFP/copier power consumption. This reduction in power consumption is said to have resulted in a 54-percent reduction in CO2 emissions during equipment use compared to products using Fujifilm’s conventional EA toner.
Also, as part of the company’s initiatives to promote resource circulation, it’s been producing remanufactured MFPs since 2010 that are guaranteed to be of the same quality and reliability as new machines.
In May 2024, the company set a new target of “natural resource input ratio of 60 percent or less by 2030”.
Overall, Fuifilm Business Innovation says it will continue to strengthen its efforts to respond to climate change and promote resource circulation by accelerating its initiatives through the production of remanufactured products, reuse of toner cartridges and waste toner bottles, and the use of recycled plastic and other recycled materials.
Sustainable Procurement
In the category of Sustainable Procurement, Fuifilm Business Innovation received maximum scores in three of the seven management indicators: Endorsement, Measures, and Coverage. EcoVadis also evaluated its participation in the Responsible Business Alliance (RBA); support for external initiatives related to sustainable procurement; and such initiatives as supplier education and risk assessment.
In addition to conducting annual self-assessments on sustainability and information security with its key suppliers in Japan and overseas, the company says it also specializes in on-site inspections. These involve a dedicated team consisting of members from the administrative, human resources, environment, health and safety, and CSR departments at its production sites conducting on-site inspections and providing guidance on improvements. The company says it will continue to strengthen its collaboration with suppliers to further promote sustainable procurement.
In addition, Fuifilm Business Innovation also recently launched its “Loop to New” initiative and logo to raise awareness of remanufactured products. This involves collecting previously used MFPs, refurbishing them, and delivering them back to customers, and working together with them to create a “resource circulation loop” for future generations.
