Canon Reports Hundreds of Clone Toner Cartridges Removed from Amazon
Canon Inc. today announced good news for itself and its partner HP Inc., to which Canon OEMs laser printers and MFPs. In about the third quarter of 2019, Canon announced it had used the Amazon Reporting Tool, letters of inquiry, and/or information letters to successfully remove 2,656 listings for third-party unauthorized toner cartridges from the Amazon ecommerce websites for Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, and France. Since June 2018, the total number of listings removed is 3,844. In general, Amazon take-down procedures are less expensive and time-consuming than patent-infringement litigation.
The unauthorized toner cartridges, which are typically manufactured in China, are designed for use with HP laser printers and MFPs. In its last several quarters, HP has reported lower supplies revenues, which are in great due to competition from these lower-priced Chinese toner cartridges.
As for the European toner take-downs, Canon says the listings offered third-party laser toner cartridges from vendors which Canon believes infringed one or more of European Patent No. 2 087 407 and European Patent No. 1 977 289.

Since June 2018, the total number of U.S. and Canadian listings removed is 522. The listings offered third-party laser toner cartridges from vendors which Canon believes infringed one or more of U.S. Patent No. 8,280,278, U.S. Patent No. 8,630,564, U.S. Patent No. 8,682,215, U.S. Patent No. 8,688,008, U.S. Patent No. 8,676,090, U.S. Patent No. 8,588,646, U.S. Pat.
