Canon U.S.A. Launches Three New imageFORMULA Document Scanners
This week, Canon U.S.A. launched three new imageFORMULA document scanners, the CR-L1, and DR-G2110 and DR-G2140 production scanners, all of which are available through authorized Canon dealers.
The imageFORMULA CR-L1 ($495 MSRP) is a compact check transport, and billed as an easy-to-use solution for high-volume batch Remote Deposit Capture (RDC) and remote lockbox check processing. The CR-L1 features magnetic ink character recognition (MICR) accuracy and reliable item handling, and is designed to streamline banking processes, as part of an electronic deposit management solution. Small and mid-size businesses, remote offices, merchants, and other remote users can use the CR-L1 check transport to scan checks, money orders, and related payment documents, helping to reduce processing time and courier costs.
Compact in size, Canon says the CR-L1’s is designed to fit areas with limited workspace. An advanced paper handling mechanism provides smooth, virtually jam-free feeding, and if a misfeed does occur, high precision Infrared Double-Feed Detection Sensors help to ensure that no data is lost. Also, the simple design allows the check scanner to be easily opened, for routine cleaning and maintenance of the scanning glass and rollers as well as clearing paper jams.
Scanning at up to 45 Checks-Per-Minute (CPM), the CR-L1 check transport simultaneously captures the front and back side of items, in color, black and white, or grayscale. The up-to-50-item Auto Feeder and up-to-50-item Eject Pocket allow for batch scanning, while a built-in electronic sensor detects misfeeds. The CR-L1 check transport is also flexible enough to reliably handle multiple document types, including paper checks, money orders, coupons, payment vouchers, pay stubs, and more. A built-in single-line printer can add physical rear endorsement on items, and virtual endorsement is available for the front and rear of item images. Both are customizable and can imprint up-to-48 characters.
Hard-to-scan items, such as checks with busy graphic backgrounds or low-contrast text, are captured by the CR-L1 check transport as high-quality images using Canon’s image enhancement technology, which is standard in the CR-L1, as well as in Canon’s entire check scanner line.
Image processing features such as Fine Text Filtering, allow for sharper image capture, resulting in better Optical Character Recognition (OCR) accuracy. Magnetic Optical Character Recognition (MOCR) is also used in the CR-L1 check transport, combining Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) with OCR processing to capture accurate MICR data. These features increase read rates and information capture with clarity and precision, helping to reduce exception items due to non-conforming images.
The CR-L1 check transport shares a common integration platform included with all Canon check scanners: the CR Software Development Kit (SDK) and Silver Bullet Technology’s Ranger API. Included with the CR-L1 check transport is a new driver installer that can run the new CR-L1 check transport, as well as the legacy Canon imageFORMULA CR-50 or CR-80 check transports. This new driver installer will emulate the CR-50 or CR-80 on the CR-L1 check transport for compatibility with existing RDC software packages already tested with the CR-50 or CR-80 check transports.
For investment protection, eCarePAK options are available for purchase to extend service beyond the initial one-year advanced-exchange warranty period for the CR-L1check transport. This helps save on costs associated with post-purchase maintenance and maximizes uptime throughout the product life.
imageFORMULA DR-G2110 and DR-G2140 Production Document Scanners
Canon also introduced its new DR-G2110 ($5,995 MSRP) and DR-G2140 ($8,995 MSRP) production document scanners, which are designed for high-volume, high-quality centralized production scanning. Canon says the scanners are among the fastest in this segment due to a dedicated, onboard image processing chip that maintains fast scanning speeds, independent of PC performance.
The DR-G2110 and DR-G2140 are designed to process large volumes of documents and withstand the rigors of production-level scanning, while maintaining high-speed, high–quality imaging. Additionally, they are said to be the industry’s first production document scanners with both USB and Ethernet network connectivity. They’re positioned for processing large amounts of documents in centralized or back office production scanning environments. They can be useful for back file and day forward conversion, in applications including records management, archiving and storage, and Enterprise Content Management (ECM).
The scanners handle up to 110 and 140 pages per minute respectively—both sides in a single pass—and hold up to 500 sheets in the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF). They can also scan in color, black-and-white, and grayscale, and the dedicated image processing chip helps them to maintain rated scanning speeds. They can handle a variety of document types, from business cards to ledger-size documents, long documents, and thin or thick documents, using the advanced feeding mechanism. This helps reduce labor-intensive pre-sorting and job preparation. Plus, double-feed detection helps to ensure that no data is lost. Durable, solid-body designs, as well as heavy duty feed and eject trays contribute to the scanners’ reliability.
The Ethernet interface offers a connectivity option ideal for Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) environments, and also allows for the scanners to be shared by PCs in the network.
The DR-G2110 DR-G2140 scanners utilize a new feature called Active Thresholding, which can convert wrinkled, poor contrast paper documents into clear, clean digital images. Kofax Virtual ReScan (VRS) Professional software is also included for image cleanup and enhancement.
The scanners feature an intuitive control panel that allows easy access to scanner settings, and user-programmable job buttons for one-touch operation. They are also equipped with a motorized paper feed tray that can be adjusted to the height of the batch, and flexible paper feed and output guides. This, plus the ability to handle a variety of document types, allows for unattended batch scanning, which can help optimize workflows and increase efficiencies. TWAIN and ISIS scan drivers are included with the scanners for compatibility with most third-party software applications. And fleet management is available for these scanners at no additional charge via the imageWARE Enterprise Management Console.
Both scanners are EPEAT Gold-rated, with Canon noting that they are the only production document scanners in the industry to achieve this rating. They also meet ENERGY STAR guidelines for energy efficiency, and comply with both the EU RoHS and WEEE directives for the reduction of hazardous substances and waste products.
For investment protection, eCarePAK options are available to extend service beyond the initial 90-day, on-site limited warranty period.
