Epson Number-One Inkjet Vendor in India; Opens New Vietnam Sales Office

Epson reports that it’s secured the number-one position in the inkjet-printer market last year in India by shipment volume and value, as per statistics provided by market-research firm International Data Corporation (IDC). In India’s printer market last year, Epson had 52.2 percent market share, followed by HP Inc., which had 32 percent market share, and Canon Inc., which had 12-percent market share.

As per IDC’s Hard Copy Peripherals (HCP) Quarterly market report (2017 Q4), Epson sold 705,656 inkjet printers in 2017 to lead the market in India. Epson captured 42 percent of the inkjet-printer market by shipment volume and 54 percent in value, while HP Inc. followed with a volume market share of 40 percent and value share of 32 percent. Canon was third with 16-percent volume share.

Epson has been the leader in the Inkjet market by value share in India for a few years now. According to IDC, Epson’s L380 has been the best-selling printer model in the inkjet-printer category. Epson’s M-series (Monochrome InkTank) “witnessed significant growth from Tier 2 and 3 cities (in India) as channel partners effectively developed newer markets such as cooperative banks, state government, etc.,” where users preferred Epson monochrome ink-tank printers to monochrome laser printers.

Epson noted that, in 2011, it was the first vendor to launch refillable ink-tank printers in India.

In January 2018, Epson also launched five new refillable ink-tank printers, the  L4150, L4160, L6160, L6170, and L6190, in India, all of which feature new integrated ink tanks, as well as page yields of 7,500 black pages and 6,000 color (cyan, magenta, yellow) pages for each complete set of four ink bottles.

Cumulative global sales of Epson high-capacity ink-tank inkjet printers have surpassed 20 million units. In India alone, Epson has sold over 2 million ink-tank printers.

Note that overall, HP Inc. continues to remain the world leader in shipments of printers and copier/MFPs for home and office use, followed by Canon, and then Epson.

New Epson Vietnam Sales Subsidiary

Epson, along with its Epson Singapore subsidiary, also announced on April 4, 2018, that the companies had opened a new Epson sales subsidiary and office in Vietnam. The new subsidiary, Epson Vietnam Company, began operating on April 1, 2018.

Prior to the launch of Epson Vietnam, Epson had previously sold products in Vietnam through its sales subsidiary in Thailand, and in 2010 had established a Vietnam representative office focused on market research.

Hideto Nakamura, the new general director of Epson Vietnam, commented: “The establishment of the office in Vietnam will strengthen Epson’s business and brand in the region. There is much potential for growth in the country, with a GDP (gross domestic product) forecast of 6.3 percent in 2017. We look forward to rolling out new Epson products in our four key areas of innovation: inkjet, visual communications, wearables, and robotics.”

According to the CIA World Fact Book, Vietnam’s GDP in 2017 was $643.9 billion.

“Vietnam’s printer market is currently dominated by laser printers. However, there is extensive scope for growing sales by emphasizing the advantages of our high-capacity ink tank printers. Epson Vietnam will play an important role in developing this promising market,” Nakamura added.

Epson says there’s “strong demand for Epson products in Vietnam,” noting that, according to the latest IDC Quarterly Hardcopy Peripherals Tracker 2017Q4 release, Epson’s market share for high-capacity ink-tank inkjet printers in Vietnam in 2017 was at 53 percent.

Epson Vietnam is located at 706, Zen Plaza 54-56 Nguyen Trai Street,District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. It currently has 13 employees, and Epson has invested $300,000 of capital into the new sales subsidiary.
