This Week in Imaging: Inkjet Driving Production Printing Growth? New HP Hardware, Solutions; More

While last week we discussed the prospects of business inkjet in the office, this week’s PRINT 17 show in Chicago reminded us of the opportunities for inkjet in production and commercial printing.

Two news items stuck out: Xerox’s introduction of the inkjet Trivor 2400 with its ability to print on standard offset paper, with no pre-coat or primer required, and 2) HP Inc.’s sale of 24 inkjet PageWide presses to Lightning Source. Both illustrate the evolving evolution of production printing, from analog ink-based, to digital toner-based, to digital liquid ink-based.

Indeed, according to PODi Insights, digital color page volume grew 15 percent in North America in 2016, and driving that page volume was inkjet: “Looking at the growth in more detail, one can readily see the page volume growth is being driven by high-speed continuous feed color inkjet.” According to research from I.T. Strategies and quoted by Xerox, 58-percent of all digital cut-sheet production print volumes will be printed by inkjet by 2019.

PODI Insights notes that, while production inkjet is being used mainly for documents that don’t require highest-quality images and special coated stock, such as transactional documents, direct mail, and books, this is likely to change:

The next phase in inkjet production printing is inkjet printing on coated stocks for pages that require higher image quality, such as magazines and catalogs, at lower cost. According to PODI Insights, the next wave of inkjet production poised to fill this segment include these inkjet systems: Canon Océ ProStream, HP PageWide presses, Kodak Prosper, Ricoh VC60000, Screen Truepress Jet520HD, and Xerox’s new Trivor 2400. HP also introduced the HP Indigo 12000 HD Digital Press for high-end photo and commercial printing, but uses HP Indigo’s liquid Electro Ink printing technology, not inkjet.

As with digital toner-based versus analog, the advantages for digital inkjet are shorter run lengths and run-length flexibility, as well as faster time to print; personalization and customization (variable printing); print-on-demand (minimizing warehousing costs); and full-color printing. Moreover, printing costs are reduced (even with coated stock), as there are fewer consumables, less maintenance, drastically lower energy consumption, far less environmental concerns such as ventilation of heat, airborne-particle removal and ozone emissions, as well as generally faster print speeds for the buck.

As production inkjet continues to improve on image quality and substrate flexibility, we foresee that it will continue to make inroads into production printing.
