While the issue appears to have been resolved, with HP Inc. apologizing and promising to issue a remedying firmware update, before the dust settled, HP was facing the threat of two class-action lawsuits, as well as thousands of user complaints over a firmware upgrade earlier this month that disabled use of third-party, non-HP ink cartridges. The blocking of non-HP ink cartridges occurred because the non-HP ink cartridges in question didn’t have the latest IC chips that are readily available from China.
It’s interesting though, that nobody seems to mind when copier/MFP vendors rebadge an OEM system, and then tweak them so that toner cartridges aren’t interchangeable between models, and toner is only available from an office-imaging dealer. We suspect that this is because the boss pays for the toner at work, but the small-office and home users have to pay for their own ink.

Fascinating news from Russia this week is that a conglomerate of companies have co-developed a business-class inkjet copier/MFP that is code-named “Katyusha” – a name that also refers to a World War II Russian rocket launcher. The MFP is said to feature an intriguing dual-cartridge ink-cartridge system, so that when one ink cartridge runs out of ink, the MFP automatically switches to another ink cartridge for uninterrupted operation, and ink cartridges may be changed on the fly.
