Loss for Sharp’s Second Half, but Business Solutions’ Sales Up 3.8 Percent
Sharp Corporation of Osaka, Japan, has reported financial results for the six months ended September 30, 2015, reporting a net loss of 83.6 billion yen and net sales down 3.6 percent, both versus the same six months a year ago. However, for the six-month period, sales for Sharp’s Business Solutions group, which markets copier/MFPs and business solutions, sales totaled 172.3 billion yen, up 3.8 percent versus the six months a year ago, and consistent with Sharp’s forecast.
Operating income for the Business Solutions group for the first half was 16.7 billion yen, up 5.2 percent versus the first six months of 2014. Sales of copier/printers for the first half totaled 78.2 billion yen, up 5.2 percent versus the previous year.
Sharp says the loss was due to lower demand for smartphone display panels in China, where anxiety over an economic slowdown is occurring. Sharp may be discussing selling its display-panel business, and has reportedly been negotiating a sale with Hon Hai Precision Industry and its Japan Display.
