Canon Enhances Next-Generation imageCLASS MFPs with Wi-Fi Direct, Scan to Cloud, NFC, Touch Screens
Canon U.S.A. is updating its imageCLASS MFP family with four new color imageCLASS MFPs and one black-and-one white imageCLASS MFP, all of which provide enhanced wireless connectivity, as well as mobile and cloud connectivity, and are for small and home offices. The new Color imageCLASS MF729Cdw/MF726Cdw (MF700 series) and MF628Cw/MF624Cw (MF600 series) MFPs replace the discontinued Color imageCLASS MF8580Cdw/MF8280Cw MFPs, while doubling the available color imageCLASS product line-up, with 10 color imageCLASS models now available. All five of the new MFPs are desktop A4 models (print and scan on up to 8.5″x14″).
For the first time, with the MF700 and MF600 Series, Canon imageCLASS printers now provide a wireless direct-connection mode that allows a user to connect their mobile device directly to the printer without the need for a Wi-Fi router or pre-existing Wi-Fi network. The MF700 and MF600 Series are also the first imageCLASS models to add scanning to cloud-based document-storing and-sharing Web sites, which is accessed via a new bundled scanning software application from Canon called MF Scan Utility, which is used for sending scanned documents directly to Dropbox and Evernote.
All four color models support the recently announced Canon PRINT Business application, available at the Apple App Store and Google Play, while the MF729Cdw and MF726Cdw MFPs add enhanced support for Near Field Communication (NFC) technology built into Canon PRINT Business, which allows a user to print a document by touching an NFC-supported Android phone or tablet to the printer. (For more on NFC, see our story, What is NFC Touch-to-Print and Why It’s a Big Deal for Mobile Printing.)
All five new MFPs support Apple AirPrint wireless printing from Apple iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch devices.

Canon rates both MFPs at up to 21 ppm in black and color modes, and they provide scan, copy and fax, as well as two-sided document imaging for print, scan, copy, and fax. There’s a a 50-sheet duplexing automatic document feeder, 250-sheet paper cassette, and 50-sheet multipurpose paper tray. Users can scan files directly to an email address or shared network folder, as well as use a secure print mode that requires password entry to release the job at the touch screen for printing. Users may also print via the Mopria Print Service or Google Cloud Print from mobile devices. There’s also a USB port for scanning and printing JPEGs and TIFFs to and from a USB memory drive.
The MF729dw adds PCL 6/5c and PostScript 3 emulation print drivers.
