HP Releases Firmware Update that Un-Blocks Use of Third-Party Ink Cartridges

As promised HP Inc. has released a firmware update that unblocks use of non-HP, third-party ink cartridges. In September, thousands of users reported that they could no longer use non-HP ink cartridges with various HP Officejet printers and All-in-Ones, after a routine HP security upgrade over the Internet to their printers. HP subsequently apologized for the update, and said a firmware update that unblocks the use of non-HP ink cartridges would shortly be available. The firmware update is available here.

The update is available for select HP Officejet, Officejet Pro, and Officejet ProX models.

NOTE: If you are getting an error from third-party cartridges, the firmware updater will not work. It states that there is something wrong with your device, it’s in an error state that you must resolve before flashing the new firmware. If you take the cartridges out, you get the same problem. They are making this as hard as possible to let us upgrade, and I may be forced to go out and buy one more set of HP cartridges to get the device out of the error state so I can use my refilled cartridges. This is abusive and will probably be the last HP printer I ever purchase.

From day one, using refilled cartridges of any type has always been a roll of the dice. If your printer is HP Instant Ink eligible, sign up for it ASAP. Otherwise, as we have mentioned several times before–you should always have some OEM cartridges on hand for troubleshooting or emergency purposes.
