HP to Make Big 3D-Printer Announcement in June

hp inventUpdate: Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman reports that HP will make its 3D-printing announcement in fall of 2014.

At an annual shareholders’ meeting, Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman reported that the company would have a “big technology announcement” in June related to 3D printing. She also says HP has solved a number of 3D printing problems – including slow speed and quality: “It’s like watching ice melt…The surface of the substrate is not perfect.”

“We believe we have solved both these problems and we’ll be making a big technology announcement in June around how we are going to approach this,” Whitman added.

It doesn’t appear HP will be marketing 3D printers for sale to consumers. Instead, Whitman envisions a FedEx-type service, under which end-users download their plans to HP service bureaus, which produce the 3D designs.

Ultimately, though, Whitman says HP will be targeting business users for producing 3D-printed prototypes and finished products.
