Canon Files Suits Against Cartridge Manufacturers; Union Technology Set to Defend Itself
On February 6th, Canon Inc. of Tokyo announced it had filed 11 patent-infringement suits in the United States against 18 manufacturers, distributors and sellers of toner cartridges that allegedly infringe upon Canon’s U.S. Patent Nos. 8,135,304; 8,280,278; 8,369,744; 8,433,219; 8,437,669; 8,494,411; 8,532,533; 8,565,640; and 8,630,564. Canon filed the suit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. The named defendants are:

American Internet Holdings, LLC
Aster Graphics, Inc.
Aster Graphics Co., Ltd.
Green Project, Inc.
Ink Technologies Printer Supplies, LLC
Innotex Precision Ltd.
International Laser Group, Inc.
Jiangxi Yibo E-tech Co., Ltd.
Print-Rite Holdings Ltd.
Print-Rite N.A., Inc.
Print-Rite Unicorn Image Products Co. Ltd.
The Supplies Guys, LLC
Union Technology Int’l (M.C.O.) Co. Ltd.
Wazana Brothers International, Inc.
The infringing cartridges are sold for use in more than 50 models of Canon and Hewlett-Packard laser printers. Canon is seeking damages and injunctive relief.
One of the companies listed above, however, Union Technology International (M.C.O.) Company, responded on February 10th to the lawsuit, noting that it and four of its related companies, including Print-Rite N.A., Inc., had been named in the suit, and also that it intends to defend itself.
In a press release, Union Technology announced: “A basic principle of the (Union Technology) companies’ business is respect for the valid intellectual property rights of others, and the companies and their counsel will respond to Canon’s allegations accordingly. In the meantime, the companies’ customers can be assured that the companies stand behind all of the products they sell, and that any resolution of the dispute with Canon will address Canon’s allegations against the companies’ customers concerning the companies’ cartridges.
