Xerox has teamed up with IT security specialist McAfee for a new security solution, McAffee Secure, that integrates McAfee security software with Xerox MFPs. Back in June of last year, we visited with Xerox in Rochester, NY, to get a preview of this new technology as outlined by McAfee’s Tom Moore, vice president of Embedded Sales, and Rick Dastin, president of Xerox’s Enterprise Business Group.
The key to this new security is whitelisting, with a small amount of code embedded in the controller. With whitelisting, only approved functions can run. Whitelisting specifies what the device can and can’t do – for instance, if malware infects the device, the device just won’t run it.
The whitelisting method offers a signficant advantage over traditional blacklisting tactics, where a user has to be aware of and proactively block viruses, spyware and other malicious software. The McAffee solution also provides an audit trail so that administrators can track and investigate the time and origin of security events, and take action on them.
“We’re trying to modernize print, bring it into the network, but you can’t do that without security. What better partner to have for security than McAffee,” noted Dastin, adding that any device on the network – whether a PC, fax machine, or MFP – can be exposed to security threats, with over 50,000 new security threats emerging each day.
Alarming Survey Results – Most Workers Don’t Follow Companies’ IT Security Policies
Xerox and McAfee commissioned Harris Interactive to survey just how much employees follow their company’s IT security policies. The survey was conducted from January 5-9th this year, and questioned 2,541 adults ages 18 and older, of which 1,391 are employed full and/or part time. The result? More than half – 54 percent – said they didn’t follow their company’s IT security policies, and many aren’t even aware of their company’s IT security policies. That means a lot of information that must remain confidential, such as customer credit-card numbers, financial reports, and tax documents may be at risk. The survey also found:
- Half (51 percent) of those employees whose workplace has a printer, copier, or MFP say they’ve copied, scanned or printed confidential information at work.
- Of 39 percent who say they’re at least sometimes worried about confidential information staying secure, 86 percent say they are at least somewhat worried about personal information, 77 percent say they’re worried about customer data, 77 percent worry about employee information, and 70 percent worry about proprietary company information.
- More than half (54 percent) say computers pose the biggest security threat to their company’s network compared to other IT devices, while only 6 percent say it’s MFPs.
- Secure PIN printing (enter a code at the MFP or printer’s control panel in order to release a job for printing or produce a copy) is rarely used. Only 13 percent of employees whose workplace have a printer, copier or MFP say they’re prompted to enter a password or passcode on the MFP before releasing a job they’ve printed or accessing the ability to copy.
“The threat landscape has evolved to include devices that when originally designed, where never considered a security threat,” said McAffee’s Moore. “Now we are seeing the need for security on devices like MFPs to protect confidential and proprietary data, which if lost or stolen, could negatively impact a company and its employees. The partnership with McAfee and Xerox embeds security into the device for better protection.”
