An Evening with HP @ New Work City (not a typo)
Last night, Kathy and I attended a Hewlett-Packard event held at New Work City located at 412 Broadway, just off the intersection of Canal Street. In this refreshingly casual setting, HP announced a partnership with New Work City (NWC) that contractually provides Officejet e-All-in-One Products for use by NWC mobile clients.
Thankfully, PowerPoint was MIA and only a single video was shown interviewing the wants and needs of NWC clients. It was pretty amusing as they detailed their “I can’t print” stories with one guy repeatedly exclaiming “It basically sucks!” (he was there for autographs). Also amusing was an interview with Tony Bacigalupo, the founder of NWC who exclaimed that when a client complains that “I can’t print,” his blood freezes as he wonders whether the rest of the day will be spent addressing the problem.
The crowd LOL’d when a competitive MFP (that shall remain unnamed) was shown in the video sitting idle with an “Out of Order” Post-It note attached and Tony subsequently stating that the printer simply “does not work.”
The gist of the whole event was crystal clear, it was not a run-of-the-mill product or service announcement, it was a clever effort to shift the paradigm of the role of the MFP in today’s office. It also hit home when you realize that in a contemporary “office” setting such as New Work City, everybody’s business is considerably more productive and profitable when you remove the traditional WiFi/wired network element from the mix and use Internet communications as an alternative. Think about it this way: with the Web-enabled HP Officejet e-All-in-Ones, no more print or scan drivers are required on New Work City (NWC) client laptops. I can’t even imagine what a headache it must have been just for NWC to support that!
As you know by now, HP’s line of Officejet e-All-in-Ones provide e-Print, AirPrint and scan/retrieve/print to and from Google docs and flash media devices for starters. As a result, all NWC has to support is a healthy Internet connection in lieu of a wired/wireless LAN infrastructure and we all know what that is like–even at home (“Daddy, I can’t: print; get on the Internet; use the scanner; find my homework; find my pictures;” etc.).
In summary, HP did a great job of making us realize how useful the mobile capabilities of the Officejet e-All-in-Ones really are, and not just more features to add to the spec sheet or another way of coaxing us into using more ink. Even Kathy and I, some of the most experienced Officejet users around, came to the realization that in a contemporary work environment, the mobile capabilities of HP’s Officejet Series of e-All-in-Ones really makes a lot of practical sense, as it frees up NWC personnel, their clients, Daddy and others to attend to other more profitable and productive chores.
